Many people are wondering, how to convert physical shares to demat. Physical share certificates used to be the most common way to prove ownership in the stock market, however they are now mostly useless and out of date. SEBI has slowly stopped issuing physical certificates for listed businesses in India. This makes it hard—if not impossible—to sell, transfer, or even get dividends quickly without turning them into electronic (demat) form.
The First Step: Open a Demat Account
To open Demat account, do the following:
- Check out the web (the best way to do it right now). Pick up the broker’s app or go to their website and click “Open Demat Account.”
- Do your e-KYC. Aadhaar-based identification is now used by most providers. You agree to share your information, enter your Aadhaar number, and get an OTP on the phone number you registered.
- Many platforms automatically get bank information with the user’s permission.
- Use Aadhaar e-sign (additional OTP step) to sign agreements online.
- Most of the time, account activation happens within one to two business days. You get a unique DP ID and Client ID that together make up your Demat Account number.
Once it’s engaged, you can start dematerialization. The process can’t go on without this account.
The Dematerialization Process After You Opened an Account
Once you have your Demat Account set up, do the following to change physical shares:
- Carefully fill out the DRF with your Demat Account number, the ISIN of the security, the number of shares, the folio number, the certificate numbers, and the unique numbers.
- On the back of each physical share certificate, write “Surrendered for Dematerialization” and sign it like the example signature that the corporation has on file.
- Attach the original certificates to the DRF and send the whole thing to your DP (in person, by courier, or at a collection facility if one is available).
- The DP checks the request and sends the certificates and DRF to the company’s Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA).
- The RTA checks to see who owns the shares, cancels the physical certificates, and tells the depository to add the same number of shares to your Demat Account electronically.
What You Get After Conversion
When physical shares are turned into electronic ones:
- They can be traded online right now (T+1 cycle).
- Dividends, bonus shares, rights issues, and splits are all added to your account automatically.
- You can pledge shares for loans online without having to provide them to someone in person.
- The chance of losing, stealing, or damaging something goes away.
- Mobile apps make it easy to keep track of your portfolio.
- Transmission in the future (via nomination or inheritance) will be speedier and paperless.
Physical shares are weak and getting harder to sell. The sooner you open a Demat Account and change them, the sooner you can get rid of hazards and take full control of your finances again. Choose a trustworthy, low-cost DP that makes it easy to register an account online and has decent dematerialization service.
